What’s new with the 2011 iPod Nano

At Apple´s media event held at the beginning of October, Apple not only introduced the iOS5 on the iPhone 4S and iPod Touch, but also unveiled updates for the latest iPod Nano. Other than some slight additions to the design the major upgrades for the Nano is the software – which is available to download for users who bought last year´s iPod Nano.

The new-generation Nano goes on sale on the 12th October and is available in seven colours with either an 8GB or 16GB memory. The revamped portable music device has been fitted with an improved multi-touch screen found in iPod and iPad, an improvement on last year´s model which first saw the introduction of the tap and swipe touch screen to Nano.

The most substantial improvement however is the built-in support for the Nike+ fitness-tracking software. The basic pedometer found on the original Nano has been upgraded to take advantage of Nike´s advanced walking and running programs and is instantly available straight from the box with no additional accessories required. Simply connecting the device to your computer automatically installs a summary panel allowing you to sync your fitness data and keep track of your routine and development.

Fitness fanatics and regular users will also benefit from the software design of the Nano´s clock which has been adapted to give you a choice of 16 new clock faces, improving its appeal as a high-tech timepiece. For users who prefer the original interface which groups apps together in a grid of four can simply switch the custom settings to revert back to your preferred choice and is easily accessed through the menu.

The only other significant upgrade is a new and improved navigation interface. The redesign comes with larger icons and multi-touch capabilities, making the Nano even more flexible and easier to use. It also has a built-in clip which allows you to fasten it to your clothes or your bag where it is easily accessible and convenient to switch tracks.

Given the new upgrades, the biggest surprise is the reduction in price. The 8GB now retails at £115 and the 16GB at £129. If you´re a music lover and looking for a reasonably priced personal player the Nano is now an even better option than it was before.
