Design – The micro-sized NWZ-B150 series is colourful and stylish and so simple to use not even your Granny would be flummoxed. Whilst the sleek, curvaceous design and shiny metallic tip looks the part, it is still no match for the chic lines of the iPod Shuffle.

Fitted with a standard USB 2.0 socket, the device connects directly to your computer without the need for cables or software CD and is compatible with MP3, WMA and ACC music files. The drop and drag method makes music transfer easy and can be used with Microsoft Windows software and iTunes.

A neat operation Sony have introduced to their range of MP3 players is the convenient Quick Charge feature which provides 90 minutes of playback time after only a 3-minute power boost – ideal when you’re in a hurry.

Track searching is clear and simple and can be engaged in one of two ways. The 3-line LCD shows track and artist information and skip function keys enable you to browse through track listings easily. Alternatively, Sony’s intelligent Zappin technology helps you find the song you want by playing the chorus to each song for either 4 or 10 seconds depending on the user setting. Press the jog button to select a track for full playback.

Playback – When it comes to audio playback, Sony don’t disappoint and the NWZ-150 series gives a rich, full sound which can be further boosted with the flick of a switch. An integrated bass enhancer adds meat to an already vibrant and clear sound. When engaged the booster is indicated by a flashing red Power Illuminator LEDs that literally dances to the music.

Users have the option to play albums back normally or shuffled, or you can set the entire library to random. The 13.5mm Ex headphones are fitted with soft silicone ear buds for added comfort and provide a clear high quality audio performance.

The 150 series also comes with a built-in FM Tuner which has an on-board recorder that allows you to store voice notes and radio broadcasts.

Given its superior sound quality, battery life and lower price tag, the Sony 150 series is a far better alternative than the iPod Shuffle.
