Nokia takes on Apple

Yesterday, at an event in London, Nokia unveiled an array of new devices that customers can use to download music, surf the internet and play games.  They also announced that they will soon introduce their own digital music service, along with an easier to use, Apple-style mobile interface and an Apple-style touch screen handset.

Nokia said it will focus its new Web services in a site known as “Ovi”, Finnish for “door”.  This will include an online music store, the Nokia Music Store, scheduled to open later this year.  The music store promises to carry millions of tracks from major artists, independent labels as well as a broad range of local artists from around the world.  The music store will let users download songs from the internet wirelessly, to their computers or mobiles; you can buy a song from your mobile and listen immediately on your phone.  This is something that the iPhone can’t do.

Apple’s iTunes store is currently the leading online music retailer, and the iPod is the most popular digital media player.  When Apple released the iPhone (combined mobile phone, media player and wireless internet device) in June, they entered Nokia’s territory.

Nokia are now going to be fighting back by moving into the digital music market, a move that they have long been expected to take.  Nokia has unveiled its own music-oriented handset, the N81, which has been designed to steal Apples thunder this Christmas, what with their European launch of the iPhone expected around this time.

I personally can’t wait to see how this match works out…
