Motorola Xoom vs Apple iPad 2

With almost a million sales within the first three months of launching the iPad2, there is no doubt Apple is the leader on tablet sales. But with people eager to update for the next gadgets, there are other good tablets in the market and companies are improving their devices and offering some freedom that apple is not prepared to offer. If you don’t want to be restricted to Apple world, then maybe the Motorola Xoom, with its improved version of Android, is the tablet for you.

Hardware
The dual-core NVidia Tegra 1GHz processor makes the tablet fast and gives more detailed graphics, almost no buffering time for media to run. There is a 32GB of memory, but if you tend to pack your gadgets with media, the MicroSD slot allows you to double your memory space. While Apple has dual-core A5 1GHz processor and has option for 16 32 or 64 gigs, you don’t have the option to expand it, though with the introduction of the iCloud service whereby only a small portion of memory space, Apple have created an innovative new way of creating memory space without the need for improving gig-size.

Display
Whilst Apple has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which to be fair is not the best for watching film or playing games, Motorola Xoom follows the widescreen trend. iPad also looses out on resolution with a pitiful 1024 x 768 px against the 1280 x 800 pixels of Xoom. However, Xoom was designed primary to be used horizontally, whilst iPad is optimized to work either way round.

Operating System
What let sales flop the first time Motorola launched Xoom was the operating system, admittedly a fault in the Google manufactured operating system. Now those problems have been fixed to make it more user-friendly the revised Android 3.1, or Honeycomb to give it it´s codename, has all the important features and more you want from your tablet. Now you can check your inbox, log directly into Facebook and get the latest updates news through widgets conveniently located on you home screens. The 3.1 will be available for download around mid-July.

Compared to Apples iOS, Android still may not look as sleek, but it does offer more room to make it your own, and it does run flash, something Apple don´t seem keen to do.

Connection
At present there is nothing to separate the two in terms of connectivity specs, but Motorola is going to offer actualization for 4G technology – allegedly for free.

Pictures
To try and leave the competition behind, Xoom bet on two powerful cameras. The front-facing camera is 2MP, whilst a 5MP is installed in the rear, together with flash and auto-focus, leaving the VGA (640×480 px) flash-less Apple Camera way behind. But if the camera option is your priority, you should be looking for a camera, not tablet as that is no practical use for taking photographs.

Apps
When it comes to Apps there is no competition. Apple will win hands down every time and it is going to take something totally innovative to knock them off their App perch. Whilst they do tie you to the App Store, Motorola does offer more freedom for selected apps though as this is an new operational feature that has only recently been written into the Honeycomb system, the apps you’ll find on the Android Market are not likely to run as well as you will find with Apple.
