iPod to make classical music trendy?

The iPod made its first live concert debut last night in Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts with the National Symphony Orchestra in an attempt to make classical music more fashionable.

The NSO and Wolf Trap made an educational video podcast that people could listen to in one ear while enjoying the concert, “Fantastic Planet: A Symphonic Video Spectacular”.

The images and large screen digital footage for the podcast have been provided by NASA and other government agencies.  They feature such ecological and geographical wonders as the Grand Canyon and frozen mountains in Antartica.

Through the podcast, concert goers could listen to a commentary about the evenings selections presented by the conductor.  The selection included works by Debussy, Vaughn Williams and Beethoven.  Listeners were instructed when to start and stop the podcast in order to keep up with the programme throughout the evening.

They hope that this is a way to shatter the impression that symphonies and symphony-goers are too serious and sophisticated for regular people.  They anticipate that in this way, through the free iPod podcasting, they can get more people going along to symphonies that wouldn’t normally attend such an occasion.

It’s a good idea, I just hope that the people who went along knew what a downbeat was, as they were instructed to begin the commentary on the conductors downbeat…
