iPod Classic Sold Out in the UK

ipod classic 2011The humble iPod Classic is not the MP3 player that gets the headlines these days, since the launch of the iPod touch the Classic has had little development, but it remains an ever popular MP3 player.

However since the start of 2011 stocks of the iPod Classic have now become almost obsolete in the UK, which should only mean one of two things, either Apple are set to release an updated iPod Classic or simply discontinue the device.

For months rumours of the demise of the Classic have been circulating, the Classic is considered “old technology” and with the rumoured launch of a 128GB iPod Touch it’s thought that the the Classic will simply walk off into the sunset, never to be seen again.

That however seems like madness when you consider that the iPod Classic is still one of the bigest selling mp3 players in the world, one report puts it as the 5th best selling media player of 2010.

One major problem with the Classic is it’s price, it’s currently on par with 8GB iPod Touch and if the 128GB iPod Touch does arrive, the retail price on this will likely be close to £350. If the iPod Classic remains, the lower price tag will always tempt folks to the cheaper device, especially those solely interested in a device primarily for music and with the Classic currently a “non app based” device it means Apple are not making as much potential revenue from these Apple users.

So it’s very likely that in the very near future, we will either see a brand new iPod Classic or the device simply retired to the Apple of Hall of Fame.

The first iPod was launched on 23 October 2001 and the current sixth generation ipod (the “Classic”) is the most recent evolution of that original design, perhaps after 10 years it is time to let to go of it.
