The next addition of the Apple iPhone, the fifth-generation, is expected for release in September. The rumour mill has already started grinding out opinions based on information leaked buy industry-insider sources. We know as well as anybody here at cheapest-iPod.com that you can’t believe everything you hear, but we won’t let that stop us spreading the dirt anyway. So what new features could consumers expect on their new mobile phone.
iPhone5 – On Display
Inside sources at Apple’s Taiwanese-based supply chain have leaked reports that Apple have been supplied with between 200 and 300 glass-cutting machines that are used to curve glass. The rumour has fuelled speculation that the touch screen display of the iPhone5 will have a curved glass cover.
So it seems Apple could be looking to sex up the design of the all seductive iPhone. Although wait! Despite the glass bending rumours a report in DigiTimes suggests glass cover makers are “reluctant to commit investment” in such equipment because of the costs involved. Perhaps the glass is not the only thing that is being bent.
Other display rumours suggest Apple is looking to enlarge the screen on the next generation iPhone by using an edge-to-edge Retina Display. It will still retain the format of the iPhone4, but will be slightly larger. All this confirms is the iPhone5 will be fitted with a new display.
The iPhone5 Photo Opportunity
Blueprints have been released showing the layout of the camera facility in the iPhone5. The plans reveal the camera lens and the LED flash are further apart than they were before. If this is the case, it will allow for improved photo quality in poor lighting conditions and reduce the “red eye” effect that is a problematic occurrence on most flash-fitted cameras.
The camera is also reported to have an improved 8-megapixel resolution for sharper picture quality. This would of course be a nice feature, but don’t hold your breath. This particular rumour comes from Apple.Pro who can’t verify the image but claim to have recovered the plans from a micro blog. It also shows the iPhone5 with a white casing, though the image has since been removed from the original source site.
The report also claimed Taiwan component supplier Largan Precision are “expected,” to receive “possible orders” from Apple in “the third quarter of 2011.” Largan supply a 5-megapixel for the iPhone4 and is the sole supplier for iPad2 so it is likely they will continue to supply Apple with cameras for the iPhone5. Whether it will actually be an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera remains to be seen.
iPhone5 is a World Phone
Other reports suggest the fifth-generation iPhone will include both CDMA and GSM radios, making it a world phone compatible with US networks AT&T and Verizon. Apple is known to have close relationships with both telephone network companies and seems a plausible rumour. But you never know.
