Apple Computer has sold one million iPads within 28 days of launching the tablet device.
If your a tech geek or an Internet blogger, then Apple selling 1 million iPads in just 28 days of general release should convince most of you to give up your day job and never write another Apple prediction again. For the last year doomsday prophesies have been written about the iPad (or iSlate, the expected name) – the iPad was the one device that wouldn’t sell and Apple would finally have produced something not desired by the masses.
If however your just a regular Joe, who loves new gadgets and latest trends, then Apple selling a million of anything is not huge news – but at a starting price of $499, that’s now over half a billion dollars in sales in under 28 days.
The biggest criticism levied at the iPad had been that it’s just a big iPhone without the phone – however the milestone of one million sales took less than half of the 74 days it took to sell the same number of iPhone handsets.
Chief executive, Steve Jobs said “it’s magical and revolutionary. Demand continues to exceed supply.”
Apple have also reported that iPad users have downloaded more than 12 million software applications from its App Store and 1.5 million electronic books from its iBookstore.
Demand has been so high in the USA that Apple has already been forced to delay the worldwide launch of the iPad, which sucks for us folks living the UK. Apple plans to announce international prices next week and to have iPads on the shelves by the end of May. Expect a starting price in UK around the £350 to £400 mark.
One huge portion of the iPad sales so far, surely has to be the number competitions giving away an iPad as a prize – Every second website I have visited this week is either running a competition giving away an iPad or already finished their iPad competition
