The iPhone was released in the USA on the 29th June with more than 500, 000 being sold in the first weekend alone. It will be released in the UK in the fourth quarter; the latter part of this year, probably just in time for Christmas!
iPhone combines their ‘best iPod yet’ with a revolutionary mobile phone. In addition, the iPhone lets you have the internet in your pocket with the best email, web browser, maps and search applications we have yet seen on a mobile phone.
The device uses a brand new ‘multi-touch’ interface and has no conventional buttons, instead using a large touch-screen. There is no need for a stylus, the only thing you need is your finger and a combination of different touches let you do everything you need to. A full touch-keyboard is also available for text messaging and it comes in two capacities: 4GB and 8GB.
The phone function of the iPhone is as simple to use as any other phone. In fact, from what I’ve seen actually seems more user-friendly than other mobile phones, especially the ‘visual’ voice-mail function.
The iPhone contains a widescreen iPod that lets you enjoy all of your pictures, podcasts, music, TV shows and movies on a beautiful 3.5-inch widescreen display. Again, this seems to be a very user-friendly version of the iPod which includes the ‘cover flow’ functionality. It also comes with a stereo headset with microphone and integrated button which allows you to answer and release calls very easily while you are listening to your music.
The iPhone also sports a built-in 2 megapixel camera and will work with Macs or PCs. You can zoom into images by ‘pinching out’ with your fingers on the screen.
The Safari internet browser allows web pages to render just as they do on your home computer. Apple has branded this ‘the first fully usable HTML browser on a phone’. Google maps is available on the iPhone which looks to be a great addition to an all-round great package.
The cost of an iPhone is $499 for the 4GB model and $599 for the 8GB model, both requiring users to sign to a two-year contract with the US-based Cingular network. At current rates of conversion, plus VAT, that prices the 4GB model at £299.
