Google Latitude App Released for iPhone

googleAfter delays of almost two years, the Google Latitude app has finally been released for the Apple iPhone. The free app allows users to locate friends and is available for download in iTunes now.

Plans to release the innovative app were first announced by Google in February 2009, but subsequently rejected by Apple as the software was not deemed to be user-friendly. Google developers had mistakenly understood the application would replace the existing Maps application already available on iPhone, but Apple rejected the application citing the two map apps would create confusion with users.

The search engine giants subsequently released a web version of the location app whilst they re-modified the software to meet Apple’s app store regulations. After nearly two years of reprogramming, the Google Latitude software is now compatible with iOS and accessible with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Its main function is to share location information using GPS technology.

The Google Latitude App allows you to see where your friends are on a map and tells you how far away they are. You can also share your location with your friends so they know when to expect you. The feature also has privacy control which allows you to show city-level information only or hide your location altogether.

Apple’s approval of Google Latitude marks the second high-profile reversal made by the multi-media giants and will go someway to defrosting the cold relationship that was hardening between the two of the premier companies in the United States. Apple had also previously rejected Google Voice application, but after more than a year of delays the app was approved in November 2010.
