User Interface – The UI screens are well planned, relatively easy to use and attractive, though the D-Plan finger pad isn’t as effective as the iPod Nano’s rotational control or the touch screen of the iPod Touch. Where the MX does come into its own however is the drop and drag software which is quick, simple and effective. The built-in SD card slot allows access to more music, video and photos in the memory card, thus the number of options available on the MX make this device a superior portable media player to the Nano, particularly given the substantial difference in price.

Display – With a 320 x 240 resolution the 2.5-inch display allows for a decent video and photo quality and only just edges the Nano’s 2.2 inch screen, though Apple’s slick rotation feature from vertical view to widescreen outshines the Zen MX. As for the iPod Touch there is no comparison, though the durable screen of the MX will ensure the machine stays in good condition for longer.

Sound – Though the sound quality may not be as good as other models in the Zen line, the audio performance of the Zen MX will still satisfy most music lovers. The sound quality without a doubt the Zen’s best feature and is superior to Apple models. If music is what you most want from an MP3, the comfortable price bracket of the MX should satisfy even the sternest of audiophiles.

Video – If the Zen MX has one major flaw, it’s the video function. It will only play files that are compatible with Creative’s in-house .cmv format which means converting most video files using Creative Centrale software and can be a bit of a bind. Though the 16.7 million colour TFT screen ensures a smooth playback with a high-resolution, it’s usability or quality is no match for Apples Nano or Touch. The small screen is not so impressive either.
