Could widescreen iPod nano rumours be true?

Earlier today, Gizmodo and 9to5mac.com along with some other bloggers published a photo of what would seem to be the new iPod nano; 5 of them actually.  The shot in question shows 5 widescreen iPod nanos forming a circle in the photo.  Most folks tend to ignore these “spy shots” as they very rarely are actually true.

However, today Gizmodo and 9to5mac received a ‘takedown notice’ from Apple Legal.  Both sites have been forced to remove the images and have now replaced them, although Gizmodo have replaced it with a replica photoshop image of the one they originally posted on the site.  This ‘takedown notice’ has added some legitimacy to the rumours and now many sites are proclaiming that this is what the 3rd generation iPod will be like.

The new nano is rumoured to be widescreen, square in shape, and will come in 3 colours we haven’t seen before: light green, light blue and cranberry along with the silver and black that we have already seen.  There is yet more speculation that Apple will produce a 4gb, an 8gb version and possibly even a 16gb nano.  If the rumours are true, the new nano will not be nearly as sleek and slim as the ones we are used to.
