Apple set to unveil new revamped iPod line

Apple is expected to unveil its new revamped line of iPods on Wednesday at a briefing in London.  European journalists will convene at the BBC’s headquarters for a live broadcast of a presentation given by Steve Jobs, Apples chief executive.

Speculation is rife about the latest updates to the digital music player that is fast making inroads in other content areas, including movies.  The new line of iPods are expected to have a full or wide-screen, and be touch-controlled versions of the digital music player.  There is also expected to be a full-screen video iPod.

The new line is forecast to boost demand for iPods in the run up to Christmas to almost 20 million units.  That does sound like a whole lot of iPods, but despite the new line the sales forecast are not as high as for the same period last year, when Apple sold almost 21 million of the music players.

A big blow to Apple is the recent news that Universal has decided not to renew it’s contract with Apple whereby it’s programmes are sold on iTunes.  These shows, which included the very popular Heroes, had made up roughly 40% of TV downloads from iTunes.  iTunes also has a growing number of competitors in music downloads, with Amazon and Nokia expected to launch their download services in the near future.
