Multimedia giants Apple has introduced a massive pricing changing on their international apps in the App Store this week – apparently, in order to improve exchange rates. As a result, UK users saw prices go up, together with Norway and Mexico, whilst Australia, Japan and Switzerland benefited from a decrease in price.
However, the move is thought to be a by-pass for another novelty Apple are reported to be launching in the not too distant future which they say is a new way for businesses to buy their apps. Labelled, “the volume purchase program”, the initiative allows registered companies to buy apps in bulk and distribute as they see fit within their organization.
According to Apple, every paid app is available for the same prices as the regular App Store, but to get the goods business need to enroll in the program. After that, “simply search for the apps you need, enter the quantity you want to buy and complete the transaction with your corporate credit card.”
This is not completely new for Apple, as they have previously offered a similar product purchasing package to educational institutes based in the US. The only thing that is unclear at present is whether businesses will receive discounts for volume buying as is the case with educational institutes after the service became available to them last August.
The benefit of the Volume Purchase Program is it is a means to acquire custom B2B apps built by third-party developers which can be incorporated to meet the unique needs of your business. Also the App store now has an option for developers to sell their apps through iTunes and will connect specifically to interested companies. Though the apps will be subject to the same strict rules as the apps submitted to the App Store, the developers can designate businesses as authorized purchases. It has been reported the apps will cost a minimum of US$9.99.
With this bulk buying programming, Steve Jobs is hoping to give businesses another reason to ditch Windows and switch to Apple. Following the successful launch of the iPad which proved to be a revolution for lots of firms across a number of sectors, Apple subsequently saw a significant spike in the purchase of iPhones and Macs as well. Research has identified that almost 35% of larger firms are offering Apple products as an incentive for employees.
