Rumours are abound about Apple’s much anticipated 2nd generation iPad, and speculation took another twist this week when The Korea Times reported Apple have shown an interest in Samsung’s Super Plane to Line Switching (PLS) LCD panels.

The new “Super PLS” Samsung Mobile Display unveiled last November is specifically designed for smartphones and tablets and has already attracted several leading mobile device manufacturers as well as the American multimedia corporation. The Super PLS is an improved version of In-Plane Switching (IPS) display which the current iPad carries. Samsung claim their Super PLS allows for improved wide-view angles, a faster response time and 10 per cent higher brightness than LG’s IPS screens. All in all, you get a far better picture quality.

Given the longstanding rumour the 2nd generation iPad will be fitted with a Retina display it seems apparent that Apple intend to upgrade the quality of their tablets current LCD screen. As anticipated by cheapest-iPod, the cost of a Retina display was always going to be a stumbling block for the Americans and now it seems as though they have turned their attention to Samsung’s improved Super PLS panels. Though the PLS does not have the advanced contrast of Retina displays and other PVA panels they still have sufficient quality to satisfy iPad gamers and movie buffs.

Despite the increased rumour frenzy however, Apple are still to make an announcement confirming plans that a 2nd generation iPad will soon be on the market. But there’s no smoke without fire and given Apple’s remarkable success with the iPad tablet, we can surely expect an announcement to be made in the coming months. Until then, the components of the handset will remain a mystery.
